"You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough." - Mae West
To me, this quote is one of urgency. This is the only life you have and if you don't make it the best life you can, then you're throwing your life away. There are so many people who reach the end of their life with all of these regrets and wished they had done this or that.
So why don't people just live more fully and experience life the way they want to while they still can? I think one reason is because of fear. Fear of failure or embarrassment or any number of things. We are our own biggest obstacle. It may help to talk to people who's lives are coming to an end. You'll find that for many of them, the fear of death takes away almost all other fears they once had.
Many people don't live fully because they're afraid of what others may think of them. If you knew you only had a few months to live, would you really care what other people thought of you? Would you care about trying something and messing up? Would you let the opinions of other people prevent you from actually spending the one life you have the way you want to?
Whether you're in your teens or your 90's, as long as there's some breath in you, start really living life. This isn't to say you should be careless. Be smart with the choices you make and the actions you take but remember that your time is limited. If there are things you want to do and experience, do them while you still can. Do those things not because other people want you to or to impress people but because you yourself want to do them.
Don't wait until a doctor tells you how long you have to live before you really start living. Remember, tomorrow was never promised to you.
